Caring for luxury rugs

Whether it's an antique, revival, or modern rug, it can make a splendid addition to any household, enhancing various areas like the living room, den, dining room, and bedrooms. You don't need to be a seasoned interior designer to admire these rugs and their understated yet captivating charm. A high-quality rug not only adds a sense of coziness but also lends a distinct design allure that makes your home feel truly special.

Caring for and cleaning your rug is a relatively straightforward process, as you might imagine. All it takes is a bit of knowledge in selecting the right cleaning products and following the appropriate procedures to ensure your rug remains in pristine condition.

Placing your rugs

Placing  your rug within your home holds significant importance when it comes to both enhancing and preserving its quality. Typically, rugs crafted from natural materials boast remarkable durability and resilience.

Moreover, it's crucial to shield your rug from direct sunlight. Subjecting your luxury rug to direct sunlight can lead to color fading and overall deterioration in its condition.

Rotating Rugs for Even Wear

Rugs don't always wear out uniformly. Certain areas may experience more foot traffic, especially when they extend beneath furniture. Another factor to consider is the placement of windows, which can result in uneven sunlight exposure and subsequent fading in specific spots.

To prevent these issues, it's a good practice to rotate your rugs at least every six months. This simple step helps ensure even wear and prolongs the life of your cherished rugs.

Minimize Foot Traffic and Shoe Wear

Most rugs can endure the rigors of everyday use, but once dirt becomes embedded in their fibers, the game changes. To maintain their longevity, it's advisable to place these rugs in areas with minimal foot traffic.

To maintain the impeccable condition of your area rug, reduce foot traffic as much as possible. Encourage family members and guests to take off their shoes before stepping onto the rug. Alternatively, you can also place a small rug at the room's entrance to trap dirt and debris before it reaches the main area rug.

This practice safeguards the rug's fibers from dirt that might get trapped under shoes and helps prevent stains and damage caused by footwear. If you have a no-shoe policy, make sure it's consistently enforced with all visitors.

Regular Vacuuming

When you invest in a luxury rug, it's also wise to consider investing in a high-quality vacuum cleaner. Vacuuming plays a valuable role in preventing and reducing potential issues like dust accumulation, allergies, and shedding.

Regular vacuuming helps increase the life of your rug

Make it a habit to vacuum your rug regularly, aiming for at least once a week, as it serves various important purposes. In areas with high foot traffic, consider increasing the frequency to twice a day, adjusting it based on how intensively the rug is used.

Remember to vacuum both the top and bottom sides of the rug using a standard vacuum head. However, avoid rotating the vacuum head, as this action could lead to significant damage.

Immediate Action for Area Rug Stains

When an unfortunate spill or stain occurs on your area rug, it's crucial to address it promptly. The longer you delay, the more challenging it becomes to eliminate, and the higher the chances it will become ingrained.

Immediately cleaning rugs stains helps increase their life

To effectively eliminate a stain, commence by gently blotting up as much of the excess liquid as you can using a clean, absorbent cloth. After completing this step, you can apply a Rug Stain Remover (or a similar product) to the affected area.

For best results, adhere to the guidelines provided on the Stain Remover bottle, and always perform a test on an inconspicuous area of the rug beforehand. After treating the stain, once again, blot it gently with a clean cloth to eliminate any residual traces.

Preserve Your Area Rug with Stain-Resistant Spray

Applying a stain-resistant spray to your area rug is a protective measure that safeguards against unsightly stains. This spray forms an imperceptible shield on the rug's surface, effectively warding off water, dirt, and typical stains. Make sure to maintain a distance of approximately 12 inches from the rug's surface and spray uniformly. Allow the rug to thoroughly dry before walking on it or reintroducing furniture to the area. To maintain optimal protection, it is recommended to reapply the spray every few months.

Use Doormats

To keep your area rugs clean and fresh, use doormats at your doorways. Doormats work well because they stop dirt and mess before they can get to your rugs. They stop your rugs from getting dirty or stained. If you can, put doormats at all the doors in your home, not just the front one. This way, you catch dirt from every direction.

Entrance rugs catch dirt and debris to keep your home clean

When you pick a doormat, find one with a rough surface and bristles that can grab and hold onto dirt and mess. Rubber or coir mats are great choices. They're strong and heavy enough to stay put, even in high foot traffic areas.

Use Carpet Beater to Renew Your Rug

Invest in a rug beater to remove dust from your expensive rugs

If your area rug appears a bit worn, an effective method to bring it back to life involves employing a carpet beater. This technique assists in dislodging embedded dirt and debris from the rug's fibers while restoring its fluffiness, giving it a refreshed appearance. Make sure to do it outdoors to avoid creating a mess inside your home.

Invest in Rug Pad

If you want to keep your area rugs looking fresh and in place, consider getting rug pads. Rug pads act like a shield between your floor and the rug, keeping dirt and dust away. They also stop the rug from slipping and sliding, which can make it wear out faster.

There are different types of rug pads, so make sure you pick the right one for your rug. If you're not sure which one to get, feel free to drop us a line.

And remember, when you have a rug pad, put it under the whole rug. This way, your rug gets the best protection, and it won't move around.

Rearrange Your Furniture

Rearranging furniture helps with the equal wear of rugs

If you've ever left a piece of furniture in one place for an extended period, you're probably aware of how it can lose its charm and seem outdated. The same goes for your area rugs! To maintain their vibrant appearance, consider shifting your furniture around every now and then.

This practice allows your rug to be viewed from various angles and under different lighting conditions, enhancing its overall look. Moreover, it's an excellent way to breathe new life into your space without making any major changes.
