Rugs for Small Spaces

Creating an ideal living (or working) space can pose challenges, especially when confronted with the constraints of room size. Small spaces, in particular, require skill and creativity to maximise their potential. More often than not expanding the room size is not an option, however creating a perception of expanse is almost always attainable. One key element in achieving that goal is flooring; carpets in particular. Selecting the right carpet or an area rug can work wonders in making small spaces appear expansive. This article provides valuable tips for adding space to your space by choosing the right carpet.

Size of the Rug

The most important factor in enhancing the spaciousness of a room is choosing the correct size of the area rug. A very common decorating mistake is choosing a rug that is too small, resulting in a fragmented and disjointed space. Instead of rendering expanse, this has the opposite effect of diminishing the area.

The appropriate rug dimensions depend on the placement of the furniture. All furniture pieces should either be placed on the carpet, or at a minimum, have its front legs on it.

Get the Right Color

We all know that lighter colors give more space to rooms. This, however, does not mean that we have to stick to plain whites or lights. Using patterns in lighter tones that go with the theme of your room can also visually expand the space.

Choosing the Right Pattern

Selecting the right pattern plays a vital role in making the room size appear expanded or reduced. The rule of thumb is that large patterns are suitable for large spaces. Larger patterns tend to make rooms look crowded. However, when referring to a large space it’s not the overall area covered by the carpet, rather the visible surface area of the carpet.

Striped patterns particularly work well for narrow rectangular spaces. In addition to giving a clean-line approach to the decor, when the stripes run perpendicular to the longer walls they create an illusion of widening the room.

Monochromatic Carpets

If you are having problems choosing a pattern that opens up space in a tight place, it’s best to go for a monochromatic piece in a light shade, for one can never go wrong with expanding space visually with a solid colored carpet. The best colors for monochromatic pieces to achieve this effect are sand, beige, taupe and ecru.

Guidelines for Textured Carpets

Adding a cut-and-pile textured piece is another great way of creating visual space, as long as big geometric patterns are avoided. A shag rug is also a good option to add space and depth.
